Title: A review of the literature on funds of knowledge within K-12 mathematics education
Advisor: Dr. Liz Arnold
Committee: Dr. Hortensia Soto, Dr. Tobin Lopes
Abstract: Funds of knowledge (FoK) is an asset-based concept applied in education research which focuses on the strengths of students and their families, including their historically and socially developed bodies of knowledge and skills that are essential for their well-being. Within K-12 mathematics education, FoK has been most useful for teachers to alter deficit perspectives in their teaching by building relationships with their students and their students’ families. Drawing from mathematics education literature and an interview with one of first mathematics educators to apply FoK in K-12 mathematics classrooms, I will discuss the history and application of FoK in K-12 mathematics education research.
