Title: Gray Level Co-Occurrence Matrix and its Application to Weather Satellite Imagery
Abstract: Texture is an important visual feature that we use to understand images, and there are a variety of mathematical methods to extract textural features from digital images. We explore one method, the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) method, that quantifies the relationship between gray tones of neighboring pixels. The first section of the paper presents the GLCM method and includes original theoretical work about the sensitivity of the GLCM method to certain image transformations. Next, we present a literature review of prior GLCM applications. One current application ripe for texture analysis is weather satellite imagery. Meteorologists use information from satellite imagery to identify convective clouds and predict short-term precipitation. Due to the volume of satellite imagery available today, the need for automated processes is undeniable. The last section of the paper presents an original application of the GLCM method to identify convective clouds in satellite imagery.
