Sonia Kovalevsky Women in Math Day is an opportunity for high school students and their teachers to join the CSU Mathematics Department in celebrating women in mathematics! CSU’s inaugural SK Day occurred on March 12, 2020. Our first year had over 150 young women register! We explored topology, cryptography, game theory, and got to hear from inspiring mathematicians.
SK Day is an opportunity to explore modern math research, to see what possibilities math can give, and to grow the mathematical community.
We are excited to announce that we will be hosting another Sonia Kovalevsky Day on March 31, 2022! This is scheduled to be an in-person event on the CSU campus. We will be following the COVID procedures set by both CSU and any state or local guidelines. For more information about policies, see the CSU COVID page.

Dr. Tegan Emerson received her PhD in Mathematics from Colorado State University. She was a Jerome and Isabella Karle Distinguished Scholar Fellow in optical sciences at the Naval Research Laboratory from 2017-2019. In 2014 she had the honor of being a member of the American delegation at the Heidelberg Laureate Forum. Dr. Emerson is now a Senior Data Scientist and Team Leader in the Data Sciences and Analytics Group at Pacific Northwest Laboratory. In addition to her role at Pacific Northwest National Laboratories, Dr. Emerson holds joint appointments as Affiliate Faculty in the Departments of Mathematics at Colorado State University and the University of Texas, El Paso. Her research interests include geometric and topological data analysis, dimensionality reduction, algorithms for image processing, deep learning, and optimization and their application to mental health, materials science, natural language processing, and chemical identification.

Our Team
Harley Meade
Harley is a third year PhD student in the math department studying combinatorial methods in harmonic analysis with applications to compressed sensing. Prior to coming to CSU, Harley graduated James Madison University with a B.S. in Mathematics.
Kelly Emmrich
Kelly is a fourth year PhD student in the math department at CSU. Her research interests involve the interplay between abstract algebra and number theory. Before beginning graduate school, Kelly graduated from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse with a B.S. in Mathematics and Ethnic and Racial Studies.
Amie Bray
Amie is a fourth year PhD student studying number theory and algebraic geometry at CSU. She is passionate about teaching and has a Degree in Mathematics with an Emphasis in Secondary Education from the University of Northern Colorado.
Dr. Rachel Pries
Dr. Pries is a professor in the mathematics department at Colorado State University. Her research area is number theory and algebraic geometry. In her free time, she likes to hike in the mountains with her family and dog.
