    Math Day Volunteer form

     

    Math Day Volunteers

    Competition Room Set-up: 7:00 am-9:30am. This involves attending a 1-hour training session prior to Math Day (arranged after assignment). This shift is responsible for setting up 16 rooms for team competition on the day of with the buzzer systems, score displays and scratch paper/pencils. You will also need to test each setup in the rooms and tape down cords in walkways as needed. Quizzing Setup/Tear down Lead is Hayden Hassebrock. This shift will also need to stop by the Math Fair and do a row of poster judging after room set up (This should take approx. 15 minutes. Judging is open from 9am-11:45am in the Math Fair, Grand Ballroom D & C). Poster Judging Lead point of contact is Hilary Freeman.
    Poster Set-up: 7:00 am-9:30 am. This shift involves guiding high school students from the registration table to set up posters and projects in the student project Math Fair (Grand Ballroom C&D). This shift will also need to do a row of poster judging (This should take approx. 15 minutes. Judging is open from 9am-11:45am in the Math Fair, Grand Ballroom D & C). Poster Judging Lead point of contact is Hilary Freeman.
    General Math Fair Activities: If you have a special interest in any of these activities we’d love to have you sign up for the Math Fair to engage with students: Western Chess, Chess puzzles, Shogi (Japanese chess), Xiangqi (Chinese chess), Flexagons (build and color hexaflexagons and other types of flexagons with students + color 3D Sierpiński triangle), Hanoi towers (with a handout to help students discover the recurrence for minimum moves needed and closed formula + there is a YouTube video QR code that can help with first steps), Origami, Galton board (with a handout to help students understand why a Galton board makes the normal distribution), Eulers Characteristic handout + build platonic solids with paper cutouts, Picks theorem handout + pegboards with rubber bands to make polygons in the plane, Sudoku puzzles, Mathler (math wordle), Challenge problems from last year, Topology – students build a mobius strip and cut it in half + topology problems (gluing together edges of a unit square thought experiment), Coloring geometry (fractals, tiling of the plane, mandalas etc.) with einstein tiles and other plane tiles, The games SET, Go, Spot It!     Morning Math Fair Shift: 7:00 am-9:30 am. This shift involves engaging with students with mathematics-themed activities and games. The Math Day Fair Coordinator point of contact is Alissa Romero. This shift will also need to do a row of poster judging (This should take approx. 15 minutes. Judging is open from 9am-11:45am in the Math Fair, Grand Ballroom D & C).     Mid Morning/Early Afternoon Math Fair Shift: 10:15am-12:45 pm. This shift involves engaging with students with mathematics-themed activities and games. Please also help orient afternoon volunteers to the games and activities (arriving at 12:15). The Math Day Fair Coordinator point of contact is Alissa Romero. This shift will also need to do a row of poster judging (This should take approx. 15 minutes. Judging is open from 9am-11:45am in the Math Fair, Grand Ballroom D & C). Poster Judging Lead point of contact is Hilary Freeman.
    Afternoon Math Fair & Tear Down Shift: 12:15pm-2:45pm. This shift involves engaging with students with mathematics-themed activities and games. Please see the morning/afternoon volunteers to orient the stations and assist with Math Fair clean up from 2 pm to 2:45 pm. The Math Day Fair Coordinator point of contact is Alissa Romero. If possible, please do a row of poster judging before your shift (This should take approx. 15 minutes. Judging is open from 9am-11:45am in the Math Fair, Grand Ballroom D & C). Poster Judging Lead point of contact is Hilary Freeman.
    Quizzing Score Runner: 11am-2:30pm. This shift involves running results from the quizzing competition rooms to the main bracket booth. When not running scores, please help direct any teams looking for rooms (there will be maps and signage provided, but those hallways are a labyrinth). Point of Contact for score runner is Bekah Lamb & Hayden Hassebrock. If possible, please do a round a row of poster judging before your shift (This should take approx. 15 minutes. Judging is open from 9am-11:45am in the Math Fair, Grand Ballroom D & C). Poster Judging Lead point of contact is Hilary Freeman.
    Quizzing Moderator: 11/11:20am-2:30pm (latest). This role involves attending a 1-hour training session prior to Math Day (arranged after assignment). Quizzing Moderator needs to arrive earlier than quizzing times to pick up the question notebook at the check-in desk and be in your assigned classroom at least 10 minutes before the competition starts. Quizzing start times are 11 am and 11:20 am. Due to the nature of the tournament, competitions will end at these times: 12:40, 1:00, 1:20, 1:40, 2:30. We need at least 4 monitors who are able to stay for the full duration (11am – 2:30). If you need to start at 11:20 or leave before 2:30, please let me know so I can place you in a room with one of these corresponding times. If you have done monitoring or timer before, please sign up for this position if possible, so we can ensure all the quizzing rooms are covered. Point of Contact for Quizzing Monitor is Bekah Lamb & Hayden Hassebrock. If possible, please do a row of poster judging before your shift (This should take approx. 15 minutes. Judging is open from 9am-11:45am in the Math Fair, Grand Ballroom D & C). Poster Judging Lead point of contact is Hilary Freeman.
    Quizzing Time Keeper: 11//11:20am-2:30pm (latest). This role involves attending a 1-hour training session prior to Math Day (arranged after assignment). Please arrive early to coordinate with your room monitor and be in your assigned classroom at least 10 minutes before the competition starts. Quizzing start times are 11 am and 11:20 am. Due to the nature of the tournament, competitions will end at these times: 12:40, 1:00, 1:20, 1:40, 2:30. We need at least 4 time keepers who are able to stay for the full duration (11 am – 2:30 pm). If you need to leave before 2:30, please let me know so I can place you in a room with one of these earlier end times. If you have done monitoring or timer before, please sign up for this position if possible, so we can ensure all the quizzing rooms are covered. Point of Contact for Time Keeper is your Room Monitor, as well as Bekah Lamb & Hayden Hassebrock. If possible, please do a row of poster judging before your shift (This should take approx. 15 minutes. Judging is open from 9am-11:45am in the Math Fair, Grand Ballroom D & C).     Competition Room Tear-down: 12:30pm-3:00pm. This shift involves an hour training session prior to Math Day. This role will quickly pack up completed quizzing rooms, especially before breakout sessions start at 1:00 pm. Tear-down of rooms will need to be coordinated with the quizzing schedule. Detail orientation is appreciated for volunteers in this role. We need to make sure every item is accounted for and packed correctly in storage boxes.
